1) Pamukkale, Türkiye’nin güneybatısında yer alan doğal bir oluşumdur. Bin yıllık süreçte
travertenler, kaplıcalar ve karbonat mineralleriyle oluşmuştur. Yüzyıllardır insanlar
Pamukkale’deki kaplıcalara girmektedir. Hierapolis antik kenti buraya inşaa edilmiştir ve

1) Pamukkale, or the Cotton Castle, is a natural formation that lies in the southwestern part
of Turkey. It was formed over millennia by travertine, hot springs, and carbonate
minerals. For centuries, people have enjoyed taking soaking in the hot springs at
Pamukkale. The ancient city of Hierapolis was built on top of the formation, and then
several hotels and resorts were built on top of it. When UNESCO declared Pamukkale to
be a World Heritage Site, the hotels there were demolished so that the natural formation
could be preserved.
2) Tourists who go to Pamukkale should know that wearing shoes in the springs is
prohibited because they are trying to protect the natural mineral deposits that created the
formation. In all there are 17 hot springs with varying temperatures between 95 degrees
up to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. The high temperatures combined with the high levels of
calcium carbonate that are present result in the deposit of the minerals that have created
Pamukkale. The hot springs are kept warm by an underground volcano that heats the
water.
3) In addition to the hot springs themselves, tourists can also see the ruins of the temples
and Greek monuments at Pamukkale, which are reminders of just how long ago people
were going to these hot springs. Historians believe that the thermal spa at Hierapolis was
first set up in the second century B.C. In addition to relaxation, the thermal pools were
also used for hydrotherapy as part of many religious ceremonies and cult practices.
