Grammar Tips

In Turkish, “Thank you” is Teşekkür ederim. Teşekkür means “thankfulness” and after this comes ederim, meaning “give”. You can emphasize Teşekkür ederim by adding çok, which means “a lot” or “so much” and that becomes “Çok teşekkür ederim” that is equal to “Thank you so much”, a politer expression than teşekkür ederim.  Thanks in Turkish is Teşekkürler. The first word, çok which is a lot , is used to emphasize the politeness of the expression. This is followed by teşekkürler and all together, it’s Çok teşekkürler.

Teşekkürler is the most common way to say “Thanks.” Use the more polite versionTeşekkür ederim in very special situations, such as when somebody helped you. Do not forget: When you are in doubt, keeping it simple is always best. You don’t have to worry about formal or informal situations; Teşekkürler can be used with just about anyone, anywhere, and anytime. You say Teşekkürler when the waiter brings your meal, when the clerk takes your luggage to your room, and when somebody welcomes or congratulates you. No matter what the person’s title, porfession or age, Teşekkürler will always be an appropriate response.

If you are with friends, you may hear “Saol” which is an alternative to Teşekkür ederim. This means “Cheers,” or “thanks”. It is mostly used among young people and is informal. If you are around people you know enough, feel free to say it, and your knowledge of informal Turkish will be appreciated.
